About Us

The Chicago Smelts are Chicago's mostly gay and lesbian Masters Swim Club, encouraging fun and participation in the sport of swimming. Members need not be gay or lesbian, but they should respect that most of the members will be. 

Our Mission Statement

As a mostly gay and lesbian swim club belonging to Illinois Masters Swim Association (ILMSA), the Chicago Smelts strive to foster an atmosphere of camaraderie where swimmers of all abilities and levels can participate in organized team workouts, train, and compete. Through social events and community service, the group aims to promote personal growth and pride for all its members.

Community Involvement

Masters Swimming

The Smelts are part of of the Illinois Masters Swimming Association, the regional group of United States Masters Swimming. Smelts regularly participate in local Masters meets throughout the season and some Smelts attend the annual Masters Swimming National Championships.

Gill Park

Over the years, we have developed a great relationship with Gill Park, a relationship which has benefited us both. We participate in the Gill Park Advisory Council, attend general Chicago Park District meetings to support Gill Park and the programs there, donate equipment for the pool, and regularly raise money to support the Gill Park Gators kids swim team.
