The previous and original logo (flying fish) is the work of local artist, founding Smelt, and one-time Smelt President, Jeff Janson. Jeff graduated with a degree in graphic design from the College of Design, Architecture, and Art of the University of Cincinnati and, in 2002, many years after moving to Chicago, received his Master of Fine Arts Degree in Painting and Drawing from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

The current Smelts logo (little fishies) is the creation of local artist and one-time Smelt, David Csicsko. Other examples of David's work can be seen locally at Ann Sather's and the Belmont 'L' station.
